Damien has more than 40 years’ experience as a Family Lawyer and is one of Perth’s most experienced family lawyers. He has been an Accredited Family Lawyer since 1992. His particular areas of practice are financial settlements and financial agreements including binding financial agreements, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements for married and defacto couples.

Damien has many years of experience in all aspects of Family Law including negotiated and litigated financial settlements and litigation involving property.

Who Damien works with
Damien grew up as the son of farming parents and has an extensive background in, and knowledge about, farming. For many years Damien also owned a farm on which he ran cattle.  He has a long list of farming clients for whom he has acted. Damien is uniquely placed to better understand the real impact on farming businesses when family relationships deteriorate, and the advice of a Family Lawyer becomes necessary.

Damien works with his clients’ tax, financial and commercial legal advisers to achieve the best possible outcome for his clients. Over his professional career, he has built a network of accounting, taxation and financial advisers and lawyers in other areas of law, who he has worked with over many years and who are familiar with the demands and challenges of resolving and litigating financial disputes.

Between finishing school and commencing law studies, Damien worked in a variety of jobs. He worked as a bulldozer operator for an earthmoving contractor in Esperance clearing land and building dams; as an ore sampler for a mineral exploration company in the Hamersley Ranges; as a trade assistant to boilermakers and electricians at Mount Newman; as a ganger on railway gangs and as a wharfie at the Fremantle Harbour.

Damien is an advocate of negotiated, and particularly mediated settlements. Mediation is an increasingly popular and successful alternate method of resolving disputes. The cost of mediated settlements, and the availability of mediators, means settlements can be concluded quickly and inexpensively when compared to the time and cost of litigation.

There are a number of retired Family Court judges and experienced Family Law barristers and practitioners available to conduct mediations.

A relationship breakdown can be the most stressful and unhappy period of a person’s life. Damien is a strong advocate of settling matters without the involvement of courts and expensive, lengthy litigation.  Where children are involved Damien’s philosophy is that every effort should be made to settle if possible. He tells his client’s that at the end of this process they may longer have a marriage, but they can still have a family.
